An abbreviation for testis-determining factor gene, a gene that codes for testis-determining factor in certain animals.

Since the presence of Y chromosome in humans indicates maleness, scientists thought that the gene responsible for the determination of maleness in humans must have been located in the Y chromosome. Later, the SRY gene was found. Scientists then believed that this is the testis-determining factor gene since it was found to trigger the pathway that leads to the development of embryo to become male. However, they also pointed out that this gene is not the only gene responsible for sexual development and determination.
