T cell receptor

Definition

noun, plural: T cell receptors

A receptor in the cell surface of T lymphocyte that is responsible for recognizing a particular antigen that is bound to major histocompatibility complex.


Supplement

This receptor is a heterodimer mostly made up of alpha and beta chains whereas a few of gamma and delta chains. This receptor is a characteristic feature of T cells. Its function is for antigen recognition. Its attachment to an antigen bound to MHC activates the T cell leading to a series of biochemical processes.
