Dictionary » S » Synapses SynapsesSynapses Specialized junctions at which a neuron communicates with a target cell. At classical synapses, a neurons presynaptic terminal releases a chemical transmitter stored in synaptic vesicles which diffuses across a narrow synaptic cleft and activates receptors on the postsynaptic membrane of the target cell. The target may be a dendrite, cell body, or axon of another neuron, or a specialised region of a muscle or secretory cell. Neurons may also communicate through direct electrical connections which are sometimes called electrical synapses; these are not included here but rather in gap junctions. ![]()

Results from our forumRe: Neurofibromatosis type 1I am no expert but perhaps blood vessels play a great deal with NEUROFIBROMATOSIS , ALSO Chemical synapses WHICH PLAYS A SPECIAL ROLE IN MUSCLES AND AND GLANDS which have a great share in hemostatis. I know you know more then me but I hope that helps a bit. I was wondering ...

The Colin Leslie Dean species paradox... One of the students insisted that the human body must have been designed by an electrical engineer because of the perfection of the nerves and synapses. Another disagreed, and exclaimed that it had to have been a mechanical engineer who designed the human body. The system of levers and pulleys ...

Can you fill in the blanksParasympathtic innervation of the heart involves a preganglionic Neuron that arises from ___________ levels of the CNS and synapses with a postganglionic neuron in a ____________ ganglion that is located in the heart wall. Conversely sympathetic innervation to the heart involves a preganglionic ...

Investigation of neurons... signals while short range cues are usually contact –mediated. Once the axons of the motor neurons reach the tissues they will innervate, they form synapses with the target cells. An experiment to investigate the effects of different target muscles on the properties of motor neurons that innervate ...

Brain size=IQ level theory (Blacks vs Whites & Asians)... differences; and (3) assume that because a 1% difference of 14 cm3 in brain size translates into millions of neurons and hundreds of millions of synapses (Haug, 1987), they are not as "miniscule" as they might appear. In an analysis highly critical of the early literature on wet brain ...
