2. (Science: medicine) A protuberance; a prominence; especially, an unnatural prominence or protuberance; as, a scrofulous swelling. The superficies of such plates are not even, but have many cavities and swellings. (Sir I. Newton)

... I am never bothered by them other than the bites and rarely even see them. I moved to the Netherlands three years ago and never got such large swellings at bite sites as I do here - I have wondered if it something to do with these strange green mosquitos.
