Hi, I have a question considering a swarming assay on E.coli... I did a soft agar (0.3%), in LB, and placed a drop of bacteria in the middle of a plate. But after 24h, they just grew in a small radius, like in the photo: http://i.imgur.com/gwYGLZE.png ...

... also some much more pleasant places and they might have much more complex life forms, who knows :) But at least our closest stars don't seem to be swarming with high intelligence species, otherwise we would probably have spotted some kind of signal from them, either intentional or unintentional. ...

One easy method, although I wouldn't condone it for identification : ) is that Proteus usually has swarming motility on plain NA, so if you inoculate the center of a plate, you will have concentric circles that extend til the edges within 1-2 days ...

Yellowjackets - Nocturnal?

I always assumed that yellowjackets return to their nests after dark but the other morning around 4:00 am I went to let my dog out and they were swarming. I would have to guess that the porch light triggered the swarm but I always get up around this time to let the dog out and it had not happened ...
