noun, plural: sustentacular cells
A type of cell at the basement membrane, and primarily functions in providing structural support in the epithelial membrane or tissue
Examples of sustentacular cells are sertoli cells in the testicle and the specialized cells in olfactory epithelium as well as in the labyrinth of the inner ear.
