(Science: cell biology) components from which a structure is built, thus myosin has six subunits, microtubules are built of tubulin subunits. In some cases it may be more informative to speak of protomers.

... issue- i have been asked to align human alpha-hemoglobin and human beta-hemoglobin. how do i know if they are talking about the alpha and beta subunits, or there are other entries that just say "alpha-hemoglobin"?
