subacute spongiform encephalopathy

A form of spongiform encephalopathy that is associated with a slow virus, which to date has not been adequately described, is transmissible, and has a rapidly progressive, fatal course; e.g., creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru, Gerstmann-straussler syndrome, scrapie.
