(Science: drug) Commonly used antibiotic in cell culture media: acts only on prokaryotes and blocks transition from initiation complex to chain elongating ribosome. Isolated originally from a soil streptomycete.

Why dialyse DMEM before protein purification (Ni-Affinity)?

Enzyme that inactivates streptomycin

Streptomycin is an antibiotic that kills bacterial species. Therefore, S. griseus produces the enzyme to not be killed. This is an example of antibiotic resistance.

Why do you suppose Streptomyces griseus produces an enzyme that inactivates streptomycin?Why is this enzyme produced early in metabolism? :?:
