One of the vast plains in Southeastern Europe and in asia, generally elevated, and free from wood, analogous to many of the prairies in western North America. See savanna. Steppe murrain.

According to studies in phylogeny of horse ... I think steppes are the enemies or predators of the ancestors of horse... In early times when horse was not able to run fast the steppes were catching them easily but as times was going the horses learned how to run faster and escape from steppes.....
