steatite

(Science: chemical) A massive variety of talc, of a grayish green or brown colour. It forms extensive beds, and is quarried for fireplaces and for coarse utensils.

Synonym: potstone, lard stone, and soapstone.

Origin: Gr, fat, tallow: cf. F. Steatite.
