Spermatid

Definition

noun, plural: spermatids

(1) Any of the haploid cells formed by meiotic division of spermatocytes, and develops into a spermatozoon after maturational events.

(2) A young sperm cell.

Supplement

The spermatids are found in the male gonads of sexually reproducing organisms. In humans, they are initially found in the seminiferous tubules of the testis and are later released from the Sertoli cells into the lumen to be transported into the epididymis where they will undergo the remaining maturational events to become fully motile, mature spermatozoa.

The spermatids are the cells produced after spermatidogenesis, and the cells involved in spermiogenesis to give rise to spermatozoa.
