A flat blade, like a knife blade but without a sharp edge, used in pharmacy for spreading plasters and ointments and as an aid to mixing ingredients with a mortar and pestle.

Origin: L. Dim. Of spatha, a broad, flat wooden instrument, fr. G. Spathe

The simplest thing is to break it up with a spatula or plastic pipet until the pieces are small enough to fall through the mouth. Then you can just rinse out the little gritty things left behind. If the flask is so large a normal spatula or pipet ...
