Sorbitol

sorbitol

(Science: chemical) The polyol (polyhydric alcohol) corresponding to glucose. Occurs naturally in some plants, is used as a growth substrate in some tests for bacteria and is sometimes used to maintain the tonicity of low ionic strength media.

Sorbitol is also used as a laxative and can be given either orally or rectally.

Food Microbiology - Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Meat

... Nutrient agar is not selective so not good. SMAC is used for isolation of O157:H7 as it will select for coliforms (bile salts) and O157:H7 uses sorbitol, it will become a nice red (if my memory is still OK)
