Plants are tricky -- they produce water by respiration but use water during photosynthesis. Burning the forests would ... and the hillsides slide into the valleys (trees and bushes stabilize the sloping soil).

Are you mounting the soil samples under a cover slip with a drop of water? That can help, as living protozoa can swim a bit away from soil particles, making them easier to see. ...
