Sex pili

sex pili

(Science: cell biology) fine filamentous projections (pili) on the surface of a bacterium that are important in conjugation. Often seem to be coded for by plasmids that confer conjugative potential on the host, in the case of the f plasmid, the f pili are 8-9nm diameter and several microns long, composed of pilin. Whether the pili merely serve to establish and maintain adhesive contact between the partners in conjugation or whether dNA is actually transferred through the central core of the pilus is still unresolved, although a simple adhesion role is more generally accepted.

fiber/hair moving thru water

... weakens the overall strength of the hair fiber. Gradual weakening of the hair fibers is involved in hair shaft defects and hair disorders like pili torti and monilethrix. Pili Torti Pili torti(trichokinesis, corkscrew hair) is the general name for rigidly twisted hair. The twisting of the hair ...

Prokaryotic Cell Question

... Here it is... During a period of low water availability, which prokaryotic structure would protect a cell from dessication (drying out)? A. pili B. plasma membrane C. nucleus D. cell wall Alright. So, I KNOW it isn't A or C. I'm struggling because I assumed glycocalyx would be an option, ...

Re:

... to butt in so late, but I found this topic interesting. Here one might argue that, at that point in life's timeline, bacterial conjugation and pili may not have evolved yet. I personally do not have any knowledge of when pili had evolved, but if someone has insight on this it would probably ...

Re: Bacterial Conjugation

I have not been able to come up with a method. One idea I had was to label an anti E.coli Pili antibody, but I don't know if that would work. If it is possible, can you tell me how?
