(Science: biology) Literally, replication of a system by itself without outside intervention. In practice often taken to refer to systems that replicate without the contribution of any information from outside the system.

But my guess for reason #2 would be for accuracy reasons in replicating the DNA in multiple short strands with the DNA repair and DNA accuracy proofreading complexes could do a proficient job.
