Pop-Sci books covering the state of biology?

... of biology. Books that cover the current state of biology as a field, where it came from and where it's going, for the educated non-biologist. My searches so far have only turned up books on specific sub-plots. I'd like to get a grasp of the big picture first. Thanks! Eric

Facts on the cell chromosomes request

i am having trouble finding facts on the web about cell chromosomes. Most of the searches I have found has stuff about Disorders and Down Sydrome, those are not what I am looking for.

membrane cholesterol

It's okay, I've figured it out. I just had to focus my searches on endothelial caveolae rather than cholesterol, but it provided in the information I was looking for.
