Saltation

saltation

1. A leaping or jumping. Continued his saltation without pause. (Sir W. Scott)

2. Beating or palpitation; as, the saltation of the great artery.

3. (Science: biology) An abrupt and marked variation in the condition or appearance of a species; a sudden modification which may give rise to new races. We greatly suspect that nature does make considerable jumps in the way of variation now and then, and that these saltations give rise to some of the gaps which appear to exist in the series of known forms. (Huxley)

Origin: L. Saltatio: cf. F. Saltation.

It used to be called the Saltation theory, but it went out of fashion and when something in science goes out of fashion scientists tend to deny that it ever existed. We now ...

See: Genetic drift, gene flow, horizontal gene transfer, molecular drive, saltation, symbiosis, niche construction, evo-devo, epigenetics (also see neo-Lamarckism) hybridization, self-organization etc... theres even a mechanism ...

Re: Natural selection ends in absurdity or nonsense

... perioud the eclipse of Darwinism. So which alternative theories are there? Theres neo-Lamarckism the notion that aquired traits can be inherited, saltation (evolution by jumps via large mutations etc), theistic evolution, vitalism or orthogenesis (internal directed evolution) etc. Neo-Lamarckism ...

Re: Theories - Origin of Life

... to explain what they actually mean by that. If Scottie questioned the randomness role behind genetic or epigenetic complexity / abiogenesis or saltation, then I still don’t see what exactly the evidence you are talking about is. Perhaps I have to admit my ignorance (and I already did that) ...
