... entire cell. Well, that's my hypothesis. I really don't know why, but I know that a burst of ethylene in plants trigger apoptosis to soften and ripen fruit, and the cell death destroys the webbing between your fingers while you're a fetus so that we don't have webbed hands.

Does fruit cells continues to ripen even after they have been taken off from the tree. does respiration still occurs? at what point do they start to decay. when the fruit is preserved in oil what happens to the cells? any particular reaction ...
