(Science: cardiology, gastroenterology) A backward flowing, as the casting up of undigested food or the backward flowing of blood into the heart or between the chambers of the heart when a valve is incompetent.

Origin: L. Gurgitare = to flood

... murmurs are abnormal heart sounds caused by: 1. blood forced to a narrowed valve opening 2. backwards flow through a valve that did not close (regurgitation) thus c and d are both correct (c when the heart is in systole and d when the heart is in diastole)
