Recognition sequence

recognition sequence

A nucleotide sequence --typically composed of 4, 6, or 8nucleotides -- that is recognised by a restriction endonuclease. Type II enzymes cut (and theircorresponding modification enzymes methylate) within or very near the recognition sequence.
