pyrrolizidine alkaloids

(Science: chemical) alkaloids found in various species of senecio and other plants. There are at least ten different chemicals, many of them hepatotoxic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic. The plants may cause damage in grazing herds, but no longer have medical use.

Pharmacological action: carcinogens.
