pulmonary oedema

(Science: cardiology) A severe state of increased interstitial fluid within the lung that leads to flooding of the alveoli with fluid. This results in a severe disturbance of gas exchange across the alveolar surface. Often results from the ineffective pump function of the heart (noncardiac causes also exist).
