pulmonary emphysema

condition of the lungs characterised by increase beyond normal in the size of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles, either from dilatation of the alveoli or from destruction of their walls. An abnormal condition of the lungs marked by decreased respiratory function; associated with smoking or chronic bronchitis or old age.
