pulmonary alveolus

One of the thin-walled saclike terminal dilations of the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveolar sacs across which gas exchange occurs between alveolar air and the pulmonary capillaries.

Synonym: alveoli pulmonis, alveolus, air cells, air vesicles, bronchic cells.
