In a five-kingdom scheme of classifying organisms, protozoa belong to a taxonomic group within Kingdom Protista, and typically divided on the basis of their means of locomotion: Flagellates (e.g. Giardia lambdia), Amoeboids (e.g. Entamoeba histolytica), Sporozoans (e.g. Plasmodium knowlesi), Apicomplexa, Myxozoa, Microsporidia, and Ciliates (e.g. Balantidium coli).


Word origin: from Greek protohi = first and zoon = animal.

Synonym: protozoon.

A recently published non-major general biology text refers to the protozoan living in a symbiotic relationship in the guts of termites as bacteria. Can such a reference be made under any stretch of the imagination?

Help Please With Some Questions

The freshwater protozoan would shrink because the saltwater surroundings contain more ions than inside and water would move out. With your RBC it's the other way round.

Help Please With Some Questions

thanks. can you also help me with these. if a freshwater protozoan was put in saltwater wat would happen?? would it expand or shrink and if a RBC was taken out of its saline matrix and put into a medium freshawater wat would happen??
