protoveratrines

(Science: chemical) mixtures of closely related hypotensive alkaloids from veratrum album (liliaceae). They have been used in the treatment of hypertension but have largely been replaced by drugs with fewer adverse effects.

Pharmacological action: antihypertensive agents.
