Proteus

Proteus

1. (Science: bacteria) genus of highly motile gram-negative bacteria. They are found largely in soil but are also found in the intestine of humans. They are opportunistic pathogens, proteus mirabilis is a major cause of urinary tract infections.

2. (Science: zoology) An urodele amphibian. It is a cave dweller and is blind, has external gills and lacks any pigment.

Do you have access to a KIA or TSI slant? Streak the stop and stab the slant to the bottom. If you have Proteus, you will have strong H2S production (black color) towards the bottom of the slant. One easy method, although I wouldn't condone it for identification : ) is that ...

i believe the oxidase test is truly negative and not positive so i'm leaning towards proteus vulgaris. let me know if anyone thinks different. Thanks.
