(Science: physiology) A nitrogenous phosphorized principle found in brain tissue. By decomposition it yields neurine, fatty acids, and other bodies.

Origin: Proto- _ Gr. A contest. See. Protagonist. So called because it was the first definitely ascertained principle of the brain.
