The blackening of the lung tissue, especially, as caused by coal pneumoconiosis.


The blackening of the lungs can be caused by the deposition of carbon or coal dust particles as a result of the continued inhalation of coal dust mine or other black particles.

Word origin: Greek pneumon, lung + -melanosis, becoming black.

Variant: pneumonomelanosis.

Synonyms: lung melanosis.
