sugar consumption and weight gain

How eating sugar(sucrose) causes weight gain ? Table sugar has low glycemic index than commonly used foods and we use little amount sugar ( usually few grams and it add only few calories ). Then, why we want to go for artificial sweeteners for dieting? Sugar converted ...
