A stalk or shoot of sugar cane of the first growth from the cutting. The growth of the second and following years is of inferior quality, and is called rattoon.

My best guess is some sort of aquatic plant along with some fish eggs.

I think that's a plant. Just look where he hooked it from. (you can see hook in upper picture) sure sign of plant-ness. :mrgreen:
