phthalide

(Science: chemistry) A lactone obtained by reduction of phthalyl chloride, as a white crystalline substance; hence, by extension, any one of the series of which phthalide proper is the type.

Alternative forms: phthalid.

Origin: Phthalyl _ anhydride.
