(Science: chemistry) A purple powder precipitated when a sulphuric solution of indigo is diluted with water.

A colouring matter produced by the action of a mixture of strong nitric and sulphuric acids on phenylic alcohol.

Origin: Gr. Foi^nix purple red: cf. F. Phenicine.
