An organic peracid formed through the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and formic acid, and used as a potent oxidizing agent for disinfection. to oxidize the cell membrane of microorganisms, leading to their eventual lysis and death.
This form of peracid is an efficient disinfectant. It acts on the cell membrane of microorganism by oxidizing cysteine and cystine to cysteic acid that leads to the cleaving of disulfide linkages in peptides. Thus, it can be used to kill microorganisms as it ultimately causes cell lysis and cell death. It is used for the disinfection of waste water.
