(botany) Fruit formation without fertilization.


Supplement

Parthenocarpy in some plants can be induced by the application of auxin. Through this, the resulting fruit is seedless.


Word origin: literally means virgin fruit : Greek, parthénos (maiden) + New Latin -carpium, from Greek -karpion, from karpos, (fruit).

Well, I must say thet this is a good point. I was thinking about it but I had no idea what for plants undergo parthenocarpy. I made some research and found information that (in nature) this is a defect caused for example by mutation. As you said/ wrote this is useless, since plants ...

how come some plants producing parthenocarpy (seedling), without fertilization? this will only waste their energy to produce those fruit for nothing..right? no seed=no embryo..i think...so..y?
