P face

P face --> freeze fracture

method of specimen preparation for the electron microscope in which rapidly frozen tissue is cracked so as to produce a fracture plane through the specimen. The surface of the fracture plane is then shadowed by heavy metal vapour, strengthened by a carbon film and the underlying specimen is digested away, leaving a replica that can be picked up on a grid and examined in the transmission electron microscope. The great advantage of the method is that the fracture plane tends to pass along the centre of lipid bilayers and it is therefore possible to get en face views of membranes that reveal the pattern of integral membrane proteins. The e face is the outer lamella of the plasma membrane viewed as if from within the cell, the p face the inner lamella viewed from outside the cell. Fracture planes also often pass along lines of weakness such as the interface between cytoplasm and membrane, so that outer and inner membrane surfaces can be viewed. Further information about the structure can be revealed by freeze etching. Extremely rapid freezing followed by deep etching has allowed the structure of the cytoplasm to be studied without the artefacts that might be introduced by fixation.

Re: Evolution of the Face and Head

If 2 advantageous mutations (A and B) arise in a population, I understand that an individual with A could mate with a B mutant. Some of their offspring could have both mutations. In an example where these 2 mutations lie on the same chromosome at different loci, I understand that through recombinati...

Re: Human Collembola Infestations

... suddenly in the last few days I've been breaking out with really bad eczema on my left arm and neck. THe hives have travelled all the way up to my face. The atopic eczema on my neck is so bad it's red and swollen and my glands hurt when I swallow. My question is, if those initial collembola laid ...

Re: need help with some home work

... first two answers are wrong. You can visualize a cross. aa x aa will never give Aa genotype for a baby. AA X AA will never give a Aa baby. oN THE FACE of it, if you have a parent Aa cross with AA, you should get a baby with either AA or Aa right? However, it is possible to get a baby with recessive ...

Re: Are these wolves or coyotes?

You probably already know this, but there are a couple of unreliable "tells" at work - more distinctive markings on the face, more robust body, less bushy tail for the wolves. It's hard to get a size from the pictures, so that's not too useful. It LOOKS more like a wolf, but it ...
