obsession

(Science: psychiatry) A recurrent, persistent thought, image or impulse that is unwanted and distressing (ego dystonic) and comes involuntarily to mind despite attempts to ignore or suppress it. Common obsessions involve thoughts of violence, contamination and self doubt.
