Neuropil threads

Dystrophic neurites made up of straight or paired helical filaments, which in turn, consist of abnormally organized cytoskeletal elements (e.g. phosphorylated microtubule-associated proteins tau and ubiquitin)

Apart from neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques, the presence of neuropil threads is a major morphological feature characterizing Alzheimer's disease.
