Dictionary » N » Neurones Neuronesneurone --> neuron An excitable cell specialised for the transmission of electrical signals over long distances. Neurons receive input from sensory cells or other neurons and send output to muscles or other neurons. Neurons with sensory input are called sensory neurons, neurons with muscle outputs are called motoneurons, neurons that connect only with other neurons are called interneurons. Neurons connect with each other via synapses. Neurons can be the longest cells known, a single axon can be several metres in length. Although signals are usually sent via action potentials, some neurons are nonspiking. ![]()

Results from our forumProblems with FluoroJade stainingHello everyone, I am trying to stain degenerating neurones with FluoroJade B. I have no training in histology, so excuse if something is out of place. The sections swallow and wrinkle and some of them even get out of the slide. It's typically perfused ...

Why do neurones only have one axon?I think more than 1 would cause more issues than it would solve firstly the action potential can spread to multiple other neurones at a synapse and transmit signals very fast. I think what you actually want to know is would having multiple axons on a neurone speed up transmission of ...

Why do neurones only have one axon?I have just learnt about neurones. I wonder why neurones have only one axon. Can they transmit nerve impulses faster and more rapidly when they have more axons? Does having more axons help in coordination? Could anyone tell me why neurons ...

Terminal DifferentiationI think that mostly they are still slowly dividing, just sometimes (like for neurones), they're stucked in G0 for years

Diffusion across a cell membrane? Blood and Neurones?Hi, I'm looking for information on blood and neuron cells. Specifically I need to know how the membrane transport mechanism in blood and neuron cells work? I am aware of concepts such as active diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and simple diffusion. The task is to look at the membrane transport mech...
