Net photosynthesis

Definition

noun

(1) The difference between the total amount of photosynthesis and the sum of the rates of respiration (i.e. photorespiration and dark respiration).

(2) The photosynthesis in excess of the respiratory demand.

(3) The rate of carbon fixation during photosynthesis minus the rate of carbon dioxide simultaneously lost during respiration.

Supplement

Since photosynthesis and respiration occur simultaneously, a net photosynthesis results. Net photosynthesis may be represented by the following equation: net photosynthesis = gross photosynthesisrespiration.

Net photosynthesis can also be depicted as a measure of the oxygen released or a measure of the carbon dioxide uptake.

Synonym: apparent photosynthesis

Compare: gross photosynthesis

Re: What happens to water during photosynthesis?

What the results are to help drinking water during photosynthesis? Wherever in the chloroplast will this kind of happen? The complete chemical substance solution involving photosynthesis is usually this kind of : 6CO2 + 12H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2 + ...

Stomata remain closed at night then respiration

1) They do not need to respire during night as there is no light, i.e. no photosynthesis. 2) see CAM plants http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crassulacean_acid_metabolism

How much CO²/O² does lettuce consume/produce on average?

... I need an rough average on the following amounts using a single full-grown plant as reference in a 24h time span: ⋅  CO² consumption via photosynthesis ⋅  O² production via photosynthesis ⋅  H²O consumption via photosynthesis ⋅  CO² production via respiration ...

Re: Transpiration and Photosynthesis.

Try to consider the light and dark reaction. A plant it active during the day and photosynthsise and in the process release excess H2O contents to the atmosphere (transpiration). So the phenomenom are complimentary.
