Definition

noun

(1) The difference between the total amount of photosynthesis and the sum of the rates of respiration (i.e. photorespiration and dark respiration).

(2) The photosynthesis in excess of the respiratory demand.

(3) The rate of carbon fixation during photosynthesis minus the rate of carbon dioxide simultaneously lost during respiration.


Supplement

Since photosynthesis and respiration occur simultaneously, a net photosynthesis results. Net photosynthesis may be represented by the following equation: net photosynthesis = gross photosynthesisrespiration.

Net photosynthesis can also be depicted as a measure of the oxygen released or a measure of the carbon dioxide uptake.
