Dictionary » M » Myelin sheath Myelin sheathmyelin sheath (Science: anatomy, neurology) An insulating layer surrounding vertebrate peripheral neurons, that dramatically increases the speed of conduction. It is formed by specialised schwann cells, that can wrap around neurons up to 50 times. The exposed areas are called nodes of Ranvier: they contain very high densities of sodium channels and action potentials jump from one node to the next, without involving the intermediate axon, a process known as saltatory conduction. A layer of myelin encasing (and insulating) the axons of medullated nerve fibers.A layer of [[ phosphoplipids that surrounds nerve fibres. ![]()

Myelin Sheath... messages can travel along a neuron much quicker if we are warming up/exercising ... Does anyone know why this happens and how this is related to myelin sheaths? My only guess is that because the fatty layer of myelin becomes more fluid (due to temperature increase), and it will somehow increase ...

Re: The Physics of how the Myelin Sheath actually works.... on the other plate, the electrons begin to move in order to reach equilibrium. The movement of the electron charges is current flow. Now the sheath can be seen as the dielectric. The plates could be likened to the Ranvier nodes. I have a feeling some may not like me analogy, but I think it ...
