Definition

noun

(1) A copper-containing oxidoreductase enzyme that catalyzes the reaction including L-tyrosine, L-dopa, and oxygen to yield L-dopa, dopaquinone, and water.

(2) An enzyme in plants and animal tissues involved in melanin (and other pigment) production from tyrosine through oxidation.

This enzyme is found in plants and animal tissues where it is involved in the production of brown and black pigments (melanin) through oxidation of tyrosine.


Synonym: tyrosinase.
