Mimosa pudica

(Science: botany) The tickleMe plant also known as the sensitive plant whose leaflets fold inwards very rapidly when touched. A more vigorous stimulus causes the whole leaf to droop and the stimulus can be transmitted to neighbouring leaves.

What is porpuse of the folding of the leaves, does this provides some advantaje to the plant?
