Meiosis I

Definition

The first of the two consecutive divisions of the nucleus of eukaryotic cell during meiosis, and composed of the following stages: prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, and telophase I.

Supplement

Briefly, the process starts when the chromosomes condense along the center of the nucleus (prophase I), and pair with their homologues during crossing over (metaphase I). Next, the pairs of chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell (anaphase I). The cell divides for the first time producing two cells (telophase I). The two cells will undergo meiosis II wherein both of them divide further into two cells.

Also called: first meiotic division

Compare: meiosis II

Re: cell division

... thank you. It's probably easiest to think of mitosis as one form of nuclear division - producing two identical genetic copies (barring mutation). Meiosis is also nuclear division but the daughter cells are not genetically identical. Cell division (cytokinesis) usually follows mitosis and meiosis. ...

cell division

... not have a nucleus to characterize the major phases of the cell cycle). Prokaryotic cells divide by binary fission, which is their cell division. Meiosis is another cell division, different than mitosis, in which eukaryotic cells use for sexual reproduction. Stem cells have an asymmetrical cell ...

Disjunction and Aneuploidy??

Meiosis can fail to separate chromosomes at either Meiosis I or meiosis II resulting in aneuploidy. Assume a female has two versions of X chromosomes. The male has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome and they have children ...

General Biology: Mitosis and Meiosis help?

Having some major trouble figuring out this question: In the orchid Vanilla phaeantha, a diploid cell in G1 contains an average 15 pg of DNA spread among 32 chromosomes. Please answer the following questions about this plant: A diploid cell in prophase should have a total of ____15___ pf of DNA, ___...
