Definition

noun

(anatomy) A sagittal plane passing through the midline, dividing the body into left and right halves of equal proportion (i.e. in the case of bilateral symmetry).

In human body, a median plane is a sagittal plane passing through the midline structures such as the navel and spine.


Word origin: Latin, mediānus, in the middle.

Synonym: midsagittal plane.
