Maxillary antrum


noun, plural: maxillary antra

A large, pyramidal in shape, air-filled paranasal cavity within the body of the maxilla, communicating with the middle meatus of the nose on the same side.


It is the largest of the paranasal sinuses. It is located just below the bony prominence of the cheek.

It consists of three recesses:

  • an alveolar recess pointed inferiorly, bounded by the alveolar process of the maxilla
  • zygomatic recess pointed laterally, bounded by the zygomatic bone
  • infraorbital recess pointed superiorly, bounded by the inferior orbital surface of the maxilla
