1. (Science: anatomy) Denoting a position farther from the median plane or midline of the body or of a structure.

2. Pertaining to a side.

Origin: L. Lateralis Situated at or extending to the side; the lateral branches of a tree; shot out sidelong boughs- Tennyson.Lying away from the median and sagittal plane of a body; lateral lemniscus.Pertaining to the side of something.

One would assume they produce better surface touch sensation - lateral movement of the ridges should pick up more than a smoother surface.
