A group of flagellate protozoa, characterized mainly by the presence of one or two flagella arising from a depression in the cell body and a kinetoplast within the large mitochondrion that extends the length of the body.

Kinetoplastida belongs to subphylum Mastigophora, and traditionally divided into the biflagellate Bodonidae and uniflagellate Trypanosomatidae. Commonly called kinetoplastids, many of these organisms cause diseases on vertebrates and invertebrates.
